The Densu Delta Wetland, located in Accra, Ghana, is a vital ecosystem and Ramsar site renowned for its rich biodiversity and significant waterbird populations. It maintains ecological balance, provides habitat for diverse species, and offers essential ecosystem services. However, urban settlements, industrial development, and land reclamation activities threaten its existence.

To address these challenges, the Centre for Biodiversity Conservation Research acknowledges the importance of community involvement and public education. It is in view of this that the CBCR with other stakeholders wish to establish a Wetland Education Centre in the Densu delta. This centre will raise awareness, promote conservation, and support research and community engagement. It will provide education programs, research, community outreach, policy advocacy, and eco-tourism initiatives.

Researchers conducted stakeholder consultations, funded by the Wadden Sea Flyway Initiative of the Common Wadden Sea Secretariat, through familiarization visits, school outreach programs, and meetings with community leaders and government institutions. Stakeholders expressed broad support but raised concerns about livelihood impacts. They requested education and training programs, expressed interest in eco-tourism, and demanded community involvement in decision-making.

To ensure the Wetland Centre’s success, recommendations include establishing a community advisory committee, developing education and training programs, conducting environmental impact assessments, and exploring eco-tourism opportunities.
